KUALA LUMPUR: Liew Way Hong is not your average victim of a tragedy. Two days after the senseless stabbing death of her husband, the 49-year-old woman was not wallowing in self-pity or bawling.
Instead, she was dishing out advice to all who came to pay their respects at the wake. Advice which she believes her husband ignored when he was confronted by a robber while driving his taxi.
Looking calm, the mother of three told friends and relatives not to put their lives in danger over a few ringgit.
"Don’t fight back. Give them what they want. Money and valuables can be
replaced by working harder. They are not worth losing your life for."
Her husband, Hong Chee Kwee, 46, died from a stab to the chest after a botched robbery in Bandar Kinrara, Puchong, on Sunday.
His mobile phone and a pouch containing his wallet with an undisclosed
amount of cash were still intact after the robbery, leading his wife to
believe that Hong had tried to fight off the robber.
"My husband was big built and strong. He always boasted he would fight off any robber who dared to rob him.
"If only he had given in, then he would have been a little poorer but he would have been alive today."
Hong was a part-time taxi driver, who earned about RM300 a day, mostly
from taking passengers to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
Liew was worried that his death would put a financial strain on the
family, especially as they had to service the loans for their
two-year-old apartment and the taxi.
She runs a watch repair shop in Chow Kit and has three children, aged 14, 20 and 24.
Speaking of Sunday’s incident, Liew said a 24-year-old man had found
Hong slumped in his vehicle near the entrance to Bandar Kinrara in
Puchong, about 11pm.
He had earlier seen the taxi driver driving haphazardly from Bandar
Puncak Jalil and decided to follow on his motorcycle, believing that
the driver was suffering a heart attack.
But he was surprised when he saw wounds on Hong’s chest and a knife on the seat.
