SYARIKAT Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) has declared war on scrap metal thieves in the Klang Valley.
The water authority said they will be working with various authorities to curb the rampant spate of water meter thefts that has hit the city.
According to a Syabas spokesman, the company will be making efforts to
meet with the police and residents associations to discuss ways to curb
the thefts.
“We are also be working closely with relevant authorities such as local
councils, fire department, Land Office, Department of Environment and
Tenaga Nasional.
“We hope to set up task forces to carry out checks on scrap metal
dealers in the Federal Territory and Selangor to ensure that they do
not have in their possession stolen water meters belonging to Syabas.
Syabas said they had visited 74 scrap metal dealers around Shah Alam in search of stolen water meters.
The company said the device had become the target of thieves following
the rising cost of scrap metal and because the Syabas water meter
contained brass.
According to a source, scrap metal can easily fetch up to RM15 per kg in the black market.
“They (thieves) are not only targeting water meters, but drain covers, fancy gates, everything that has some value,” he said.
It was earlier reported that 33 units of water meters were stolen daily on average, from January 2005 to March 2006.
Syabas chief operations officer Lee Miang Koi said that for the whole of last year, there were 9,800 cases of meter thefts.
