PUCHONG MP has assured residents and businesses of Taman
Sri Serdang that Jalan 18/7 will not be closed until the authorities
have a chance to discuss the matter with all parties.
Lau gave the assurance after visiting the site where residents and
business owners in Sri Serdang protested against the proposal by
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) to close the road.
The entry point of the road is located within UPM premises but the road
is one of the two main arterial roads for traffic in the area.
The Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) had received an application
from UPM to close the road based on a privately commissioned study that
found doing so would lessen the traffic within UPM compound and ensure
all vehicles entering the university compound would do so via the front
gate.
MPSJ rejected the proposal as the road served many of the 8,000
residents of Sri Serdang and many UPM students renting houses in Sri
Serdang would also be forced to use the main road.
The road was however closed on Aug 12 at 3pm but after an hour-long protest by residents, UPM authorities removed the barrier.
“There will be no road closure until residents, the university
representatives and MPSJ have a chance to sit down together to find a
solution,” said Lau.
