PETALING JAYA: The Master Builders Association of Malaysia has
appealed to the Government to review the proposed levy on employers as
it would dampen the building industry.
MBAM secretary-general
Wan Chee Leong said the association was concerned that construction
companies might not be able to absorb the extra financial burden.
“Though the Malaysian economy expanded steadily from 7.6% in the first
quarter, 8% in the second quarter and 6.8% in the third quarter of
2004, the growth is not reflected in the construction sector, which
only achieved 0.6% growth in the first quarter and a decline of -1.7%
and -3.0% in the second and third quarter respectively,” he said in a
press statement yesterday.
The Home Ministry had on Monday said that employers would have to pay a
portion of the levy imposed on their foreign workers under a proposal
by them.
