Longer lifespan for old landfill PDF Print E-mail

KUALA LUMPUR: The Cabinet has decided to extend the operation of the Ayer Hitam landfill in Puchong for three months pending the completion of the new Bukit Tagar sanitary landfill in Hulu Selangor.

Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting said the new 405ha landfill was part of the overall waste management plan.

The others include stepping up the recycling campaign to promote the principle of “reduce, reuse and recycle”.

“The Cabinet has decided that Bukit Tagar will be used as the site for a new sanitary landfill for Kuala Lumpur and Selangor,” Ong said yesterday after witnessing the presentation of contributions for The Star Earthquake/Tsunami Relief Fund at the Tunku Abdul Rahman College in Setapak here.

A mock cheque for the money, raised by the students in a three-day collection campaign, was presented by the college principal, Yoong Lai Thye, to The Star’s group chief editor, Datuk Wong Sulong.

Ong said the new landfill would hopefully be ready by the end of this month and be operational next month.

He said the landfill was equipped to treat leachate (tainted water from rubbish) and would have a lifespan of 40 years.

On the probe into three firemen in the siphoning of water from a fire hydrant to a fish pond in Subang Permai, he said it was completed and that action had been taken against them.

One fireman was demoted while the promotional prospects for the other two had been frozen.

“All three lost their bonuses in 2004,” he added.

On national service, he said over 520 students from the college had joined as trainers following the Government’s call for a multiracial make-up in NS trainers.

Ong, who is also the college chairman, commended the students for their initiative.

He also praised the college for organising other meaningful activities such as its annual blood donation campaign to help replenish the National Blood Bank.

New dumpsite at Bukit Tagar

KUALA LUMPUR: From next month, all garbage generated in the Klang Valley and its surrounding areas will be disposed of at the new Bukit Tagar dumpsite in Hulu Selangor, Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting said on Friday.

The housing and local government minister said Bukit Tagar will replace the present dumpsite in Air Hitam, Puchong, which has reached its optimum capacity.

Ong said the Cabinet has approved the 260ha site in Hulu Selangor for operations starting next month.

"The Puchong dumpsite, initially set to be closed on Dec 13, will continue to be used until the new site is ready," he told reporters after receiving RM50,000 for the National Disaster Relief Fund from the students and staff of Tunku Abdul Rahman College.

Ong said the Cabinet made the decision two weeks ago following several rounds of discussions between the Economic Planning Unit, Finance Ministry, Housing and Local Government Ministry and Selangor state government.
