TANGKAK: The Housing and Local Government Ministry wants residents in fire-prone areas to set up voluntary fire-fighting units to help control the flames before the arrival of firemen.
Such volunteers could play a vital role in preventing the loss of property and lives, minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting told reporters in Bukit Gambir here, yesterday.
He said many voluntary fire-fighting units had been formed in the
northern states, especially in Kedah and Penang, and he urged other
states to follow suit.
“There are several volunteer fire
fighters in Johor, but, we want more areas to set up such units,” he
said after presenting a mobile water pump to the Bukit Gambir New
Village volunteer fire-fighting unit.

volunteer fire-fighting unit chief Siang Chang after presenting the
unit with a mobile water pump.
Ong, who was accompanied by
Ledang MCA division chairman Datuk Yap Chik Dong, said he was surprised
to see the Bukit Gambir volunteer fire-fighting unit well equipped.
He said the residents, especially the youths, should join such units to help their community in the event of a fire.
On
the proposal by the Johor government for Bukit Gambir to have a fire
and rescue department, Ong said the ministry would try to include the
project in the 9th Malaysia Plan.
“At present the ministry has
to focus on finishing on-going projects stipulated in the 8th Malaysia
Plan, which will end next year,” he said.
