KUALA LUMPUR: Housing developers should plant hibiscus plants as part of the landscaping to promote the national flower, said Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting.

He said as a national flower, the hibiscus was not getting its deserved recognition, as people seem to forget its significance.

“(Promoting) the national identity should be encouraged and housing developers can take the lead by promoting it,” he said at the launching of Duta Tropika, a luxury project by S P Setia Berhad here.

Present were S P Setia director Tan Sri Zaki Tun Azmi, group managing director Datuk Seri Liew Kee Sin and S P Setia Foundation chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

Ong said the ministry urged housing developers to plant more plants in order to fulfil the country’s vision of planting 20 million plants by 2020.

He said while the Government could act as the facilitator, it needed the support of the private sector to realise the goal.

“However, we want them to plant the right plant at the right location. Not anywhere they like,” he said.

Ong lauded S P Setia’s effort in promoting a quality living environment for the people including ensuring the safety of residents by providing CCTVs and security patrols.

Duta Tropika is located next to the company’s Duta Nusantara development in Sri Hartamas and features 138 units of exclusive resort-styled garden and courtyard villas.
