KUALA LUMPUR: Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri
Ong Ka Ting wants Malaysians to come together to make the country a
greener nation with a string of garden cities by the end of this year.
Expressing this wish for 2005, he said this could be achieved with the
right attitude and discarding the “not in my backyard” mentality.
“There is no more land in the urban areas to treat waste.
“You can't push the waste to someone else's backyard and expect them to bear with the smell and pollution.
“This is our environment and we need to work together,” he said at the
27th annual dinner of the International Real Estate Federation (FIABCI)
at the Crown Princess hotel here last night.
Ong said he would like to see more trees planted in the nation and
hoped that Malaysia could be recognised as a nation of garden cities by
the year end.
“I hope by the end of the year, you can see enough trees, plants and
flowers to green our environment. So please, plant more trees.
“Start a gotong-royong or a campaign to make the place we live in greener,” he added.
The dinner raised RM33,488 for the Precious Gift Home, a shelter for abused and abandoned children in Ipoh.
FIABCI kicked off the fund-raising with RM5,000. Berjaya Land Berhad
chief executive officer Datuk Robin Tan contributed RM20,000.
The money was handed to the home's founder, Albert Morris.
