SHAH ALAM: Klang Valley's six million water consumers must be
prepared for a 15% tariff hike in a year's time, said Energy, Water and
Communications Minister Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik. He said
the increase was to cover some RM11.73bil in expenditure on new water
supply facilities and replacing old ones over the next 30 years.
He said Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas), Selangor's new
water supply concessionaire, was allowed to make the tariff adjustment
at three-year intervals.
The first tariff review would take place on Jan 1 2006.
“The first review is projected to increase by around 15%. It is subject
to the approval of the Federal and Selangor governments.
“I would like to make it clear that any increase in water tariff is
subject to certain financial parameters that have been included in the
tariff adjustment formula,” he said.
He said the increase was also subjected to the company's operating
performance based on the percentage of Non-Revenue Water (NRW) and the
distribution of cost where specific targets have been agreed upon.
Dr Lim was at the signing ceremony between the Federal and Selangor
governments and Syabas on the firm's appointment as the new
concessionaire.
Syabas is 70% owned by Puncak Niaga Holdings Bhd with the remaining 30%
stake held by the state-owned Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Bhd.
It would take over water supply services in the Klang Valley from Perbadanan Urus Air Selangor (PUAS) from Jan 1.
Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamed Khir Toyo said the state
government would ensure that consumers would not be short changed in
any decision to increase the rates.
“We hope the consumers will not only get better services but more
importantly better quality water all the time,” he said, adding that
over the past few years the state government had to fork out about
RM500mil to cover the debts incurred by PUAS.
