One of our forum members did setup a petition to get the Ayer Hitam Landfill to be moved out as soon as possible! I decided to publish this news on our website, as i think its a good way to show how many people are affected by the lack of progress on the government side. It has been promissed over and over again that the landfill would be closed down, but till now still no progress. It is time to let the people we appointed as our leaders, know that we are not happy with the way they deal with this issue.

So please sign the petition to close the Ayer Hitam Lanfill by clicking here

Read more about landfills and the Ayer Hitam Landfill:

  • New source of power at landfill
Quote from the article : "It also contains toxic and carcinogenic substances, as well as volatile organic compounds that contribute to smog."

  • Jana Landfill Power Project
Quote from the article : "This landfill area receives 3000 tonnes per day of garbage from major parts of the   Klang  Valley."

  • Conflicting interests at landfill
Quote from the article : "ONCE tucked away within a secluded forest, the Ayer Hitam Landfill in Puchong, Selangor, today finds itself sitting smack in the middle of a burgeoning residential area as housing development had been approved with little thought given to the potential health and environmental risks. "

National Policy on the Environment which integrates the three elements of sustainable development: economic, social and cultural development and environmental conservation was formulated and approved in 2002. The Policy aims at continued economic, social and cultural progress and enhancement of the quality of life of Malaysians through environmentally sound and sustainable development. It is based on eight (8) inter-related and mutually supporting principles set to harmonise economic development goals with environmental imperatives:

  • Stewardship of the Environment
  • Conservation of Nature's Vitality and Diversity
  • Continuous Improvement in the Quality of the Environment
  • Sustainable Use of Natural Resources
  • Integrated Decision-Making
  • Role of the Private Sector
  • Commitment and Accountability
  • Active Participation in the International Community

In keeping abreast with the country's rapid economic development and to meet with the nation's aspiration for an improved quality of life, the National policy on the Environment serves as an important guide to all stakeholders to ensure that the environment is clean, safe, healthy and productive.

And their vission :

Uniqueness, diversity and quality of the environment are conserved towards maintaining health, prosperity, security and well-being for the present and the future.

And of course our government is busy with solving these issues since 2003, almost 3 years later nothing has changed. And if it did, it didn't get better for the Ayer Hitam Landfill and the citizens around it.

Look for example to this Powerpoint presentation from 2003 from the SERI website titled: Overview of solid waste management in malaysia

Atleast they clearly show the responsibility in the document: Local Authorities are the implementing agencies and have direct responsibility over solid waste collection, treatment and disposal.
